When Being White Doesn't Draw Enough Attention

Over the past several months I have gotten used to people staring at me, giggling or rubbing my arm just because I'm white. It really doesn't bother me, sometimes I kind of feel like a celebrity, the other day however my friends and I drew attention not because we are white, but because, well . . . let me tell you.

Wednesday my Canadian friend, Asia Pacific friend and I were coming home from an event a little ways up the mountain. As we were driving down the road the locks on the van doors started going up and down by themselves. All of the sudden they would stop and then start up again; all 3 of us were baffled with this strange happening and were enjoying a good laugh. The next thing we know we hear this siren behind us and think, oh wow that car behind us doesn't look like a police car, but it must be. Thankfully they weren't pulling us over but turned off their siren, or so we thought and passed us. We drive a little farther and hear the siren again . . . this time we realized that the siren is coming from OUR car. Oh man, talk about embarrassing!! It keeps starting and stopping as the locks continue to go up and down, until finally the siren just stays on and keeps getting a bit louder as we go. Suddenly our little van has turned into what sounds like an ambulance, but isn't really. Who knew that it even had an alarm system, we sure didn't!

For the last 15 min of our drive the siren was going continuously as we made our way home. People would stare as we passed their motor bikes, people would stare as we went by their houses and the closer we got to town the more people there were to stare. We laughed and laughed and laughed!! We even stopped, turned off the car and the siren just kept on going! We dropped off our Asian Pacific friend and then headed to my others friend's house where we park the car, turn it off and take out the key . . . and yes the siren is still going! Her husband walks out and asks what is going on as she's laughing and saying she doesn't know as I'm trying to get my door open while laughing as the locks continue to go up and down. Oh wow, what a story . . . so much for not drawing attention to ourselves. =)

We found some wires that were missing some of their plastic insulation and that had gotten wet from the rain, so we think that is what was shorting out to cause such a ruckus. I wish that I had video because it really was hilarious!!
