Making Sate

Last week we were having people over to our house, so Kat and I learned how to make sate ayam another one of my favorite Indonesian foods.  Basically sate is chicken kebobs that are marinated, grilled over charcoal and served with rice and spicy peanut sauce.  My mouth is watering just writing this.

Our house helper roasted the peanuts and then I ground them up in our blender we then combined the ground peanuts with lots of different spices, brown sugar, chilies and stirred it all up to make an AMAZING peanut sauce.

Our neighbor had never made sate so when she heard that we were learning she came over too to learn along with us.  (Our house helper is in yellow and our neighbor is in blue)

There is even a special little grill for cooking sate, however a restaurant that specializes in sate would have a bigger version of our grill.  To keep the coals going we set up a fan so that we didn’t constantly have to fan the coals with cardboard or something.

I ended up taking over the job of grilling all the sate . . . it was super fun and I was kind of sad when I didn’t have any more meat to grill.

Look at those coals all nice and orange.

Almost done!  Most expert sate grillers bunch up 6+ stick and flip that many at one time.  By the time I was finished I was turning over 5 sate sticks at a time.  I’m almost ready to go professional. =)

Me with all the sate . . . over 100 sticks of delicious chicken sate just waiting to be covered with our deliciously amazing peanut sauce.

Let’s make a deal . . . you come visit and I will make you sate. =)
