Night Hike

Last weekend I had the opportunity to hike Mt. Merbabu, a dormant volcano. We started hiking at about 11:45 pm Friday night and made it to the summit about 6 am. Our hike started about 1/2 way up the mountain, so I guess we are kind of cheaters in that respect. Our goal was to make it to the top to see the sun rise.

About an hour in on of the gals knees started bothering her so her and her husband ended up going back down to sleep in the car.

I think this was right around 4 in the morning, so that explains the crazy faces.

I have to say that this girl right here gets a million bonus points for making it to the top of Merbabu. She was determined to go even though she is 5 months pregnant. I’ve got to say she has some determination!!! Way to go Bri!!!

In the background you can see Mount Merapi the most actitve volcano here. You might remember that last fall this was the volcano that was erupting. The mountain that I climbed is the mountain that sits in between my town and Merapi.

2 years ago when I came to visit we climbed Merapi and I would love to climbed it again.

DSCN4573 DSCN4512About 2 hours from the top Shane mentioned that he had a present for all those who made it to the summit. To my great joy when we got to the top he pulled out a bag of beef jerky!!!

I think that I might have screamed when I saw the bag. =) Thanks for sharing Shane!!!

It’s so hard to show the trails that we hiked and climbed, but here you can see a trail on a ridge . . . and yes we did walk along that.

Roomies!!

DSCN4547Me all dressed up warm . . . it was pretty windy and chilly up at the top, but really not that super cold. I was very thankful for my hat and gloves that I bought special for the trip and my rain pants and coat helped to block the wind. For the first 1/2 of the hike I was only wearing a t-shirt and for the last half I had put on a long sleeved t-shirt and was wearing my hat part of the time. If we stopped for too long of breaks it would get a little chilly and so I would put on my rain jacket. At the top I pulled my rain pants on over my jeans and I was nice and warm.

Chilling, resting, eating “breakfast” and enjoying the view from the summit.
