Kopi Luwak is the world’s most expensive coffee. Some people wonder why it is so expensive when the process of making Kopi Luwak is rather disgusting.
First, whole coffee berries are eaten by a “palm civit” and then pooped out. As they are digested by the civit they lose their acidity which makes kopi luwak unique in it’s smooth flavor and lack of bitter aftertaste.
In this picture you can see the green beans and the ones that are still a little poop coated. Once the beans are “rescued” they are then throughly washed and dried before they are roasted. The jar on the left has the green beans before being roasted and they look and smell just like normal green coffee beans. The jar on the left with the slightly poop coated beans just smell a bit like dirt.

Being the brave soul that I am I gave kopi luwak a try . . . ok, ok . . . I actually had it one time in the states after one of my friends came back from Asia Pacific and brought some with her. I think it is delicious and the bitter aftertaste is none existant.
I was excited to enjoy a cup of kopi luwak again this time in one of the countries that produces kopi luwak.
