Ronde

One of my favorite past times is going into town and getting Ronde. I have become addicted to this delicious ginger drink . . . it’s so tasty! The first time I tried it I didn’t love it, but now I love it and crave Ronde, it’s kind of ridiculous.

First they put a small scoop of each of these little jelly things, a scoop of peanuts, and then a few balls which are made with sticky rice flour and have a bit of brown sugar in the middle.

Next they fill up the bowl with the warm ginger “drink”. The mix is made from ginger, lemongrass and water. Sometimes it can be quite spicy and that is when it taste the best.

Usually along the main rode through downtown as late afternoon to early evening comes people start pulling up their carts and setting up their little stands to sell all kinds of different food items. The stores close, but the street remains alive with “night café”. Ronde is just one of many things that you can buy along the side of the road in the evenings.

If I’m with my friends we will stop and get Ronde and eat it there, but if I’m out on my own and just craving Ronde I will get it to go. The put it in a little plastic bag tie it and then stick it in a little black plastic shopping bag.

A bowl of this ginger drink will cost around 50-70 cents. And when you have a sore throat or a cold that is some pretty cheap, tasty medicine.

Enjoying Ronde last night with my dear friends who encourage my Ronde cravings by taking me there often. They are a sweet family who have taken me in as part of their family and love being able to treat me to this wonderful aspect of life.
