Since arriving in Asia Pacific I have visited people in the hospital (rumah sakit) several times. Following the culture here means that if your neighbor or friend is sick or in the hospital you go visit them. I’m not talking about just you and one other person go to visit, but like your whole neighborhood goes. Just today the ladies in my neighborhood went to visit another lady who was in the hospital, and we had a group of at least 15 people. When you get to their house or hospital room everyone files through and shakes hands with the sick person and their family. You stand around for a bit, maybe talk, maybe not and then everyone files around again and shakes hands again. You might bring them bread, fruit or money, but no balloons or flowers. Last week our friend had to have his appendix removed so he was in the hospital for a couple days recovering. 3 of us decided to ride our bikes to visit him about 45 min away. I was very impressed with the hospital it is new and very nice. We didn’t go in a huge group, shake his hand, bring him bread, fruit or money, but we did visit so we fulfilled our cultural duty, even if he isn't from here. ;)
