This afternoon our house helper was frying kerupuk and asked if I wanted to try, so I did. =)

It’s a hard food to describe because there are MANY different varieties, taste and colors and usually different kinds are eaten with different meals. However it all starts as this flat little dried piece of . . . something. It’s made from rice flour, wheat flour, rice, singkong and who knows what else. The kerupuk that we fried today was about the size of a quarter, but after it is fried it’s about the size of a potato chip. As soon as it hits the hot grease it grows and sort of resembles styrofoam.

This is a look at how it is sold in the markets . . . all kinds just in a big plastic trash bag. =)

I feel like this is the kind that you would have at a fiesta . . . so many bright colors!

These remind me of dried uncooked tortillas.

Some kinds are yummy others taste like fish and are less yummy. The veggie and garlic flavored ones are tasty, unfortunately they also have msg . . .oh well I will enjoy them from a distance.
