Deliciousness Called Putu

IMG_1652
After living here for a while a friend got this little steamed coconut cake called putu for me to try. DELICIOUS!!

IMG_1650When you hear the sound of the constant whistle blow you know that there is a man selling putu in your neighborhood. Some ride bicycles, some push a cart and some carry it on their shoulder, but one thing they all have in common is that they sell this little white cake that is absolutely delicious.

They start by packing a mixture of rice flour and coconut into a little piece of hollow bamboo. Once it is filled half way they add a layer of brown sugar and then pack in more coconut and flour.

Once everything is packed in they place it on this wooden board that has a bunch of holes in it that is on top of steaming water. They let one side steam and flip it over to steam the other side.

Once both sides are done they slide it out onto your plate and put a little coconut and sugar on top. It’s nice and warm and delicious and 1 little cake is only 5 cents so the putu on the plate in the picture was 50 cents. Once they are done at your house they put their whistle back on the steam pipe vent and leave.

Some days I have to restrain myself from running out the door and having the putu man come to my house . . . it’s just so delicious! Have I mentioned that it’s delicious?!?!
