The excursion that I had been waiting for finally came earlier this week . . . watching the process of making Batik!
This guy was dipping a stamp in a special wax and then putting the design on the fabric. You can see already that there is a design and color . . . the layering process begins to get the desired result.
The ladies were filling in some of the stamped portions all by hand.
This is the special tool (canting) that they use to get the wax where they want it. You dip the dark brown part in a pan of hot wax to fill up the small reservoir and then it drips out the little point.
We got to use the canting to apply wax to a small piece of fabric. They had a design that was already traced onto our fabric so we just had to follow the lines. Once we were done with that we could free hand whatever we wanted. After the wax is applied you "color" you fabric to get the desired result.
Next it was dipped in some sort of something, I don't really know what but it made the colors visible.
Our batik was then dipped into boiling hot water to remove the wax and then dipped into cold water to cool it off.
Last step, wait for it to dry.
Looking at these you may wonder how old the people making them were . . . well, we are all adults, but let me tell you something . . . it's WAY harder than it looks. Also, we didn't really get to pick our colors, they just set a color down in front of us and put some on our fabric to get us started. All in all though, it was SUPER fun! I'm excited to go back again when I can speak Indonesian and make something that actually looks semi-nice. (mine is the far left one)
